Chris Higbie is an established trombone player residing in San Marcos who actively performs with several music ensembles across the South Austin and Hill Country areas, ranging from orchestra and wind ensemble to big band. Though his primary instrument is trombone, he specializes in bass trombone and also performs regularly on tuba. He found a renewed love for music when switching to bass trombone in his sophomore year of high school. Chris has studied under the talented Joshua Brown (who performed with the University of North Texas’ Grammy award-winning “One O’Clock Lab Band” jazz ensemble). He also studied Music Performance at Southwest Texas State University under Charles Hurt. During his time at SWT, Mr. Higbie performed with multiple ensembles including the Jazz Ensemble under the leadership of Freddie Mendoza, the Jazz Orchestra under the leadership of Dr. Keith Winking, the Southwest Texas State Orchestra under the baton of Dr. Howard Hudiberg, the Bobcat Marching Band, and the Symphonic Band.
He was also selected to perform with an ensemble that toured across Europe, performing iconic American Band Literature across seven countries. Additionally, he has performed as a guest artist with the lead jazz ensemble at Texas State during recruitment tours. In addition to performing with local friends and fellow artists in both chamber and full ensemble capacity, he also enjoys performing as a featured soloist in local community ensembles. Mr. Higbie has also been fortunate to pass on his passion for music, teaching private lessons to both local area high school students as well as to students of the SWT music program. While not playing music, Chris enjoys working on his photography and taking long drives through the state of Texas and beyond.
